Artist's Comments

I started this prismacolor in 2001. I had only been doing colored pencil for about a year, off and on, and I didn't have the skill to finish it, or even any idea what it needed, though it did get framed and hung up-----------this fall I finally figured it out and thought I finally could execute my ideas. Here is the finished drawing. It still isn't perfect, but it's as good as I can get this version.

Firestorm by *goldenSalamander is an absolutely fantastic work done in coloured pencil. The colours are vivid, and the attention to detail is just breathtaking. (Featured by `twosilverstars)

Very impressive work. I love the intensity of the oranges and reds. And this is colored pencils? Wow :headbang:

Thanks, those had to be intense to simulate fire-or sunset. I never was completely sure if they were running from fire, or just enjoying a great sunset. Hmmmm. Glad you liked it.

I think this came out very well - I'm glad you finished it. Usually, once things start to go wrong for me, or once I put something down for too long, I end up not going back to it (or if I try too hard to work through the problems I end up killing it completely). Maybe a good 'time out' is the best thing actually, when things get stuck. Honestly, the only part of this that seems a bit distracting is that some of the larger rocks/ areas seem to be too much of one color (like the blue/brown/purple on the right). Of course, I think that coloring also helps distinguish the different sections and help bring them forward more (so if the colors had a smoother transition, it might make the picture too flat, so this way would be better anyway). I love the highlights in this - I'm mostly a graphite nerd - if I tried this with colored pencils I'm pretty sure that things would get ugly rather quickly.

The colors and overall movement of the lincorns are excellent. I like the fact that the warm colors are behind them, they seem to be escaping from a great fire or something like that. It is also very detailed, great work. I have nothing negative to say, sorry ! ;)

Usually I end up doing the killing thing, too. :bonk: It was just that I couldn't take it any furthur at that time and it was so large it was too daunting to try until I was pretty sure what to do. Colored pencil-solid color like this-is such a slow process as you build the layers.

Those rocks and the color/value transition from back to front were what I was referring to as being a problem, one of the problems. I had to be rougher and flatter in some areas than I like..........using more black. I appreciate your taking time to give it a real critique. Have a good day!:sun:
